Important Factors to Check Before Going Kayaking with Your Family

Kayaking is a popular recreational activity that has been growing in popularity for the past couple of years. It’s an excellent way to enjoy nature and get some exercise, but there are important factors you should consider before taking your family kayaking.

Let’s see which ones!

Kayak Rentals and Checks

Before you go kayaking with your family, it is important to check with nearby kayak rentals. Good places to rent from are generally located near rivers and lakes where other people frequently go kayaking. The rental place should be able to provide basic information about safety precautions that need to be taken while going on the water such as what to do in an emergency, life jackets requirements for adults and children, etc. If you have your own watercraft – you should be sure to check the state of it. If you need kayak registration, and depending on what kind you have, it is vital that you make sure everything is in good and legal condition. Therefore, you will be ready for an upcoming summer kayaking adventure!

On the other hand, if you’re new to kayaking or it’s been a while since you last went, then get a good beginner model which will make your experience more enjoyable. As for the family, it’s good to have a couple of kayaks between you to reduce the weight and make it easier for all of your river adventures!

Be Prepared

Before going out on a kayaking trip with your whole family, be sure that everyone knows how to swim and has basic knowledge about kayaking. It would also be ideal to know CPR, or at least how to call an ambulance. When you are out on the water it would also come in handy for each person to dress practically by wearing clothes that they don’t mind getting wet and shoes that they can easily slip off; chances are they may fall into the water unexpectedly. A hat may also come in handy as well as sunglasses. For those who plan to bring along their pets, be sure that they are well-trained and won’t get lost or cause problems while you’re still on the water.

It would also be smart to have a first aid kit in case anything happens while out on the water. This way you’ll be able to treat any wounds or illnesses if they should occur. And, of course, life jackets are a must – for you, your family, and your pets!

Awareness Each Moment

Be aware of other watercraft like jet skis or boats moving around the area where you are kayaking. Also, pay attention to any overhanging trees that may lead to branches falling; they can give you a nasty bump even when in the water! When near large cities, check for pollution levels and be mindful of your surroundings when choosing a place to kayak. Also, try to find out if there are any dangerous or poisonous wildlife (e.g. alligators) living in the area and stay away from them while you’re kayaking around their habitat!

In addition, when possible, use a map app on your phone that will work even when offline to avoid getting lost! And lastly, bring along a spare battery pack for emergencies in case something happens with yours while you’re out on the water.

Weather Changes and Water Currents

It is important to check the weather before you go kayaking. If it’s an especially sunny day, make sure everyone brings along hats and sunglasses because it may be windy enough for you to lose them if they’re not tied down. Rain should also be checked because if there are large rain clouds in the area then your trip could get cut short or canceled entirely depending on how bad it gets. Keep an eye out for storm warnings and flash flood alerts.

Make sure to check the current of the river before kayaking especially if you’re trying to go downstream. If everyone’s an experienced swimmer, then this won’t be anything too big, but it’s still good to know how strong it is. Plus, parents should always keep an eye on their kids close by to make sure nothing happens unexpectedly.

Kayaking with your family can be a fun and exciting experience, but you should always go prepared. Check the water for strong currents, bring along life jackets for all of your family members (including pets!) in case anything happens while on the water; make sure everyone knows how to use one before going out on the water. Be aware of other boats that may also be nearby when kayaking downriver near large cities, and lastly, don’t forget about checking weather reports beforehand so you know what type of clothes will be needed for the day.
