Keeping It in the Family
Text by Debbie Kunder
It was for the love of their family that Dan and Raj Chugani moved halfway around the world to open the first Kay’s Fine Jewelry in St. Maarten in 1989. The brothers created Kay’s Fine Jewelry, which is celebrating 30 years this year, with deep family values that have attracted loyal clients who keep returning, again and again.
It’s only fitting that the next generation of the Chugani family joined the family business to keep the legacy going. In 2003, Dan’s son, Tesh Chugani, stepped into the business with the intention of carrying on the same values that Kay’s was originally founded on, while also bringing his deep passion for design to the table.
Over the last five years in particular, Tesh has taken the lead on design for the majority of Kay’s custom items. As Tesh resides in Aruba, a source of inspiration for his designs is the island itself, naturally. Many of this designs feature rose gold, reflecting the warm tones of Aruba’s famous sands and sunsets, and of course, he features a lot of blue to capture the essence of the gorgeous Caribbean Sea. He aims to give island guests a reminder of the beautiful island of Aruba for when they return home.
Tesh also travels all over the world, seeking inspirations for his unique collections and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. Traveling the world and encountering different lifestyles, different views, and different cultures has shown him that like beauty, quality of life and well-being are in the eye of the beholder. It is these qualities that he brings to his designs, which, as they are passed down from one generation to the next, become another family’s legacy.
Meet Tesh in person at Kay’s Fine Jewelry in Oranjestad, Aruba, Monday – Saturday, 9:30 am to 6 pm. He would be honored to design something unique just for you.
