New Zealand Wines Highlighted at H & H Fine Wines & Spirits
H & H Fine Wines & Spirits brings together well known as well as boutique wineries and distilleries from around the globe, introducing islanders and visitors to a varied portfolio of wines and spirits to discover. This month, the shop (located at Ponton 75-A), is highlighting three wineries from the New Zealand wine region with special prices.
In 1984 Marlborough was little known. However, drawing on their German heritage the three brothers recognized that cool-climate winegrowing created wines with flavor. Since then wine drinkers throughout the world have fallen in love with Giesen Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc making it a runaway success. So buying their first Marlborough property, Dillon’s Point Vineyard in the Wairau Valley in 1993 was a natural step. Since then, the Giesen brothers determination to make wines people love has driven international recognition for Marlborough and its Sauvignon Blanc.
Rippon Vineyard & Winery
Rippon’s story begins in 1912 when Sir Percy Sargood bought a high country station on the western flanks of Lake Wanaka. Three decades later, while serving in the Second World War as a submarine lieutenant, Percy’s grandson, Rolfe Mills, was struck by the vines growing on the schist slopes of the Douro Valley that reminded him of those back in Wanaka and, with that, a hunch was born. In 1975, Rolfe and his wife Lois began planting experimental vines and, in 1982 began the commercial planting of the 15ha that today comprise Rippon.
This remote, rugged region is our Tūrangawaewae, our place of belonging. Māori for pathway, Ara (pronounced are-ah) captures the journey of working in harmony with our environment to make pure cool-climate wines which reflect Marlborough’s story. Our viticultural and winemaking teams work in harmony with the region’s climate, growing vines and making wines that pay tribute to this incredible landscape.
